Bio:
Lisa
Chamberlin is a painter who lives and works in New York City. She grew up in
western New York and studied sculpture and painting at the State University of
New York at Oswego where she received her BFA. Lisa has spent the
last ten years working on a series of paintings titled Living In-between, whose subjects are expressive
female figures. Her paintings have a sculptural quality. She works in
acrylic and builds up the thick paint with a palette knife, resulting in a
textural, impressionistic-like painting. The figures often occur isolated
on the canvas, each dynamic pose depicting a struggle. The gestures,
unusual use of saturated colors, and configurations of the paintings give
opportunities for new interpretations.

Statement:
Living In-Between - Series
This series started with an all green pallet, the
form blending with the environment like a summer foliage camouflage. The title
of the series was inspired by the chapter in a children’s book called the World
between Worlds. The characters come across a beautiful land that they
soon discover makes them so content. If they are not careful and stay too long,
they would become part of the landscape. In this land there are
innumerable ponds spread about. Each pond would lead into another world
with new experiences, each completely different from the other. My world
between worlds, Living In-Between, depicts my journey of living the
life I dreamed I would. These paintings are like self portraits; they
tell my story as I go thru life, discovering and growing.
I am always pushing,
re-evaluating, and figuring out how to let go of expectations. Along the way, I am learning to never become
too complacent, reflecting on where I came from, and carefully choosing the
next pond to enter.
I have been painting figures for many years, but I
am not so much interested in the figures themselves, but rather using them as a
symbol. Each pose or position of
the figure becomes a focus for me and how it relates to the space around
it. My figures are an
expression. Each are struggling
and evolving, two things that often cannot exist without the other. They
are struggling with the space around them and with themselves. The forms
take up most of the canvas and are absorbed in their own isolation. In
solitude, there is time for contemplation and self-examination without any
outside distractions. They are
confined to the boundary of the canvas, as if they are trying to push out, like
a flower opening up to find it’s full potential.

The tremendous success of the first annual Springville Fall Art Crawl has prompted another such event for spring. The first annual Springville Spring Art Crawl Exhibition will preview from 12:00 - 5:00 p.m. on May 5, 2012 followed by opening receptions from 6:00 - 10:00 p.m. at participating Downtown businesses on Main Street, VanOver Fine Arts and Springville Center for the Arts. The exhibition will feature several area artists including Heather Harris, Karen Olejniczak, Diane Lehmann and many more. Art selections include painting, sculpture, and photographs. The artistry featured in the Crawl, which was juried by VanOver Fine Arts Director Richard VanOver, will be shown in businesses along Main Street.
Other events planned during the Art Crawl including Springville Center for the Arts ‘Cinema at the Center’ featuring filmmaker Matthew Ehlers, and the opening of "Living in Between", an exhibition of paintings by Lisa Chamberlin at VanOver Fine Arts.
Sponsors for this exhibition include the Downtown Springville Economic Development Group, Springville Center for the Arts and VanOver Fine Arts. The exhibition will be on view through May 25, 2012.
